Shriram Bharatiya Kala Kendra (SBKK) is an Indian cultural auditorium which runs a noted school for music, dance and performing arts in New Delhi. It was founded by Sumitra Charat Ram in 1952 and it imparts training in Indian classical dance styles and music, including Kathak, Bharatanatyam, Odissi, Chhau, Hindustani Classical music, both Vocal and Instrumental. Its associated organisation is the Shriram Centre for Performing Arts at Safdar Hasmi Marg, in the Mandi House area, the cultural hub of Delhi; the centre includes a theatre for the performing arts, a theatre repertory company and an acting school. It is also one of the largest auditoriums in Delhi. Often referred as Bharatiya Kala Kendra, the Kala Kendra holds an important place in history performing arts education in India. Its current director is Shobha Deepak Singh daughter of its Smitra Charat Ram. Today it is most known for its annual Ramlila production, the enactment of the life of Rama which takes place during the Dussehra festival month, and first started here in 1957, and over the years has used different choreographers, style to include both folk and Indian classical dance to produce fresh choreographies. Through its various programs and stage performances, the group has tried to capture and enshrine as aesthetically as possible the best from religion, mythology and folklore. And, the Ram Lila performed over 2000 nights both in India and abroad has been one of its major achievements. Another notable achievement of the Kendra, of which it is justifiably proud, is the revival of the Kathak dance — one of the classical dance styles of North India. The Kendra has made serious efforts to revive and restore the Kathak to its original dignity and as a result of its efforts; Kathak now takes a rightful place among the great dance styles of India. The Kendra has also contributed to the resuscitation of the Mayurbhanj Chhau style. Considerable research has gone into this performing art. The Kendra has its own puppet troupe for many years, run by Rahi and Keshav Kothari, while the Puppet Section of the Kendra staged several important productions over the years, including Dhola Maru, Jhansi Ki Rani and Prithiviraj-Sanjukta, which even won the first at Puppet festival in Udaipur. This played an important role in establishing modern puppetry in Delhi. The Kendra also houses an art gallery at the ground level and its library has a large and rare collection of books, audio and visual recordings and extensive archives.
